Five passing drills you can run alone

Forearm passing is the skill that improves fastest with volume, and it is the easiest one to practise without a partner. These five drills need a rebound net, or a flat wall and a little patience.

1. The ten in a row

Set the net at its steepest angle. Pass to it, let it come back, pass again. Count clean returns in a row and stop at ten. If the ball goes wide, start the count again. The point is control, not speed.

2. Move then pass

Put a cone two steps either side of you. Shuffle to a cone, back to the middle, then pass. The footwork is the drill; the pass is the test.

3. Low and high

Alternate one low, flat pass with one high, soft pass. It teaches the platform angle that controls height.

4. The platform freeze

After each pass, hold the platform still for a count of two. It shows straight away whether the arms are swinging.

5. Finish with twenty

End every session with twenty passes at match pace. Short, focused sessions four times a week add up to more touches than most players get in a month of club training.
